ABSTRACT

The principle operations needed to model a folded plate structure are illustrated in the series of images shown. First of all, the roof cross-section is drawn (typically as a closed polygon) in an elevation view. This is then extruded to the required length. To minimise movement between views, the cross-section of an individual edge-plate can be drawn in the same view and extruded to the required thickness. Similarly, an individual column can be modelled. Another edge-plate and as many columns as are required can be copied and pasted (the combined operations of copying and pasting are often referred to as duplication). These additional elements now need to be inserted into the required positions. To do this accurately, it will be necessary to work in plan view in wire-frame mode so that the edges of individual objects are clearly visible, and can then be positioned correctly.
