ABSTRACT
Despite the disruption caused by HIV infection, respondents sought to put their lives back together and to establish narrative coherence. A central part of establishing a coherent sense of self is that of normal izing, in which individuals strive to maintain participation in previ ously occupied social roles (Becker 1997). This chapter addresses two research questions: How do women repair the disruption caused by their diagnosis and restore their sense of identities? That is, how do women integrate HIV/AIDS into their lives and establish or main tain participation in important social roles (e.g., parent, worker, lover, friend)? What are the limits to women’s coping strategies? In ad dressing these questions, women’s primary strategies for dealing with the disruption caused by HIV and reconstructing their identities are presented.
