ABSTRACT

There is a story, perhaps apocryphal, that the famous philosopher, Ludwig Wittgenstein, once became embroiled in a profound discussion with a colleague on the platform at the Cambridge railway station. The guard blew his whistle, but they were oblivious until the train began to trundle away, whereupon Wittgenstein raced after it with the colleague in his wake. He leapt aboard perilously, but she was left behind disconsolate on the platform. “Never mind, love,” said a sympathetic porter, “There’ll be another train along in 10 minutes”.
