ABSTRACT

This chapter reports on the development of the CALLE (Computer-Assisted Language Learning Environment) prototype language training tool. CALLE supports foreign language learning by giving assistance in understanding and analyzing foreign language texts, such as documents and articles on a given topic. The system offers a windowbased environment in which learners are presented a text for translation, analysis, or some other practical task. When learners encounter language they do not understand or complex constructions or usage patterns they want to know more about, they can query the text for relevant linguistic information. Learners can query text at the word or sentence level to elicit morphological, syntactic, and semantic information. By aiding the comprehension of complex linguistic constructs, this information is designed ultimately to improve learning of the target language.
