ABSTRACT

Section I presents systems for intelligent computer-assisted language learning (ICALL) that are largely text-based, both in terms of what the user puts in and in terms of how the system prompts and reacts to it. The emphasis is on the parser and its accompanying lexicon and morphology. This emphasis, capitalizing on the strength of syntactic analysis in current natural language processing (NLP) technology, moves pedagogy in the direction of grammar-focused instruction. The contrast is clear between the systems in Section I and the communicative games and visual microworlds that dominate the succeeding sections of the book.
