ABSTRACT

Before you read this chapter, try to remember an occasion when you heard someone using what you thought was "good English." Now, try to remember as well, an example you've either read or heard that is representative of what some people might call "bad" English usage. What specific features of language, do you think, made these language usages "good" or "bad?" Finally, look again at the headnote taken from W. S. Gilbert: What does the headnote say about "good [or bad] English?"
