ABSTRACT

For the convenience of the reader the illustrations have been subdivided into seven groups. Provided with more detailed captions than is the norm, they can be “read” and studied in and of themselves as well as in conjunction with the portion of the book to which they belong. Thus, for example, in the caption for Fig. 39, the second folio of the 1569 inventory, cross-referencing is provided to the de’Cavalieri engravings which have been set apart in a group under VII, as well as to the relevant photographs in III and V. At the same time, reference is also made to the mention of the Hercules in II, 73.
