ABSTRACT

Why is it that students who seem completely unmotivated in class will exert heroic efforts on the playing field? Why will students put in long hours to prepare themselves and their teammates for a football or basketball game, a debate tournament, or a chess match? Why is it that students’ best friends are so often other students who have been on the same teams? Why do most students recall their “moment of glory” as a time when they “came through for a team,” not a time when they excelled in class?
