ABSTRACT

Hispanic families in the United States face many challenges to their survival and development (Carrasquillo, 1991; Valdivieso & Davis, 1988). In spite of these challenges, Hispanic parents show the desire to provide their children with the best moral and spiritual values and material means. These goals are achieved in more or less degrees due to the Hispanics’ precarious socioeconomic experience in the United States. This chapter briefly describes the Hispanic experiences in the United States, emphasizing how they have affected the family and its role in the socialization and educational processes of their children. This chapter presents a frame of reference regarding the Hispanic family in the United States to objectively describe and evaluate Hispanic parents’ involvement in the education of their children.
