ABSTRACT

Rochelle and Charles both describe why issues of trust and honesty are important to understanding others. Truth is the ability to present self as subject. For Lisa, being honest or truthful means presenting the same self in all social situations. Participants were asked to describe the criteria they used to judge another as honest, truthful or credible. When conflicts arose in interpersonal relationships, the source of dispute was named truth, trust, or honesty. Conflict is a positive and necessary condition for subject to subject relations to share personal perspectives. When individuals act personally, or when they do not choose to be stifled by social perspectives of larger social group and act out of their unique perspective, conflict is inevitable. The intended structure of Behind Closed Doors (BCD) learning event was to be a place where dialogues of critical contestation, interrogation, and confrontation could be voiced.
