ABSTRACT

This chapter examines some important variables which influence the acculturation patterns of minority groups and new immigrants within US organizational cultures. National culture and organizational culture correlate highly with each other according to Alder. The mode of acculturation an individual chooses for US organizational culture, will relate to the mode employed to acculturate to the US national culture. The degree of collectivism-individualism of minority members and immigrants will be related to the acculturation patterns they use within US organizational cultures. When a comparison between two cultures is made using individuals' perceptions of both cultures, the difference in their perceptions of the two cultures is called perceived discrepancy. Degree of reiigiosity refers to the extent to which a person conforms to his/her usual beliefs or established religion. The degree of religiosity of minority members and immigrants will be related to the acculturation pattern selected for dealing with the organizational culture of their US employer.
