ABSTRACT
In order to be able to deal with the interaction of negation and modality, it is necessary that we have a clear idea what exactly is meant by “negation” and “modality.” In this chapter, I discuss negation and modality from a crosslinguistic perspective. The theories that are relevant in this respect are evaluated according to their relevance for crosslinguistic research.
