ABSTRACT

This chapter first describes the central technologies employed in steel minimills producing high quality steel products from scrap iron. Second, it sets forth the central arguments of this study, focusing on the mechanisms facilitating transfer of steel minimill technology throughout world markets and the organizational systems found within the unit of the firm. Chapter 3 presents a fuller discussion of these behavioral issues. In addition, two salient questions are posed: How is capacity built? How is demand sustained? These central questions and the dependent and independent variables that are identified in Chapter 2 will be treated in detail later in this study.
