ABSTRACT

British admiral and first sea lord from May of 1915 to November of 1916. Born at Barnsley on 21 January 1855. Jackson joined the Royal Navy in 1868 and fought in the Zulu War. He was naval attaché in Paris in 1897. As a captain he met Marconi, and this association led to the introduction of radio (W/T) into the Royal Navy in 1900. As third sea lord and comptroller of the Navy (1905-8) Jackson supported development of the Dreadnought and battle cruiser Invincible. After subsequent service in the Mediterranean, Jackson headed the new Naval War College at Portsmouth and trained the first war staff officers. In 1913 he became chief of the war staff of the admiralty.
