ABSTRACT
Pre-World War I Russian military planning envisioned two options in response to German actions. A German main offensive against Russia would bring a Russian counterattack against Germany. If Germany's main blow should be against France, then Russia would strike against Austria. As it turned out, French pleas for help led the Russians to attempt both offensives at the same time, with the result that both failed.
