ABSTRACT
Japanese beginning teachers learned to teach through their enculturation into teach ing. What they learned ranged from how to teach specific subjects to what general goals of teaching they should pursue. Our findings suggest that beginning teachers in Japan and the United States shared the goals of teaching embedded in the culture of teaching.
