ABSTRACT
Macan's list of aesthetic qualities, formal procedures, and stylistic
traits linking the two styles could well have been generated by examin-
ing a single quintessential work of progressive rock, King Crimson's
fifth studio album, Larks' Tongues in Aspic (LTA).4 This study, however,
is centrally concerned with stylistic links at once more esoteric and yet
more fundamental than those Macan cites; links that, moreover, run
deeper even than the structural parallels Covach finds in "Close to the
Edge." This is not to say that the concrete structural parallels linking
LTA to the art music tradition are not interesting in their own right.
