ABSTRACT

Sadalberga (c.605–670), abbess of Laon, is reported, in the ninth century Vita Sadalberga abbatissae Laudunensis, to have received a vision of heaven, briefly described, in which she is carried up by a splendid white bird. Heaven is described in terms of a river amd a pleasant meadow full of fragrant flowers where she meets Magobert, Amiliana’s son - evidently an acquaintance of hers - and Anseris, bishop of Soissons. He shows her the gates of paradise, the city of God and the seats of the twelve apostles. She is promised a place in heaven, but because her sisters at the abbey need her, she is sent back to life again.
