ABSTRACT

Germany, on the invention of printing, presented a wide field for the binder; and the artists of that time appear to have neglected the opportunity presented them. To the steady and continued support of her kings and wealthy men may be attributed the high position the binders of France for a long period occupied, over those of England or any other country. The invention of the Art of Printing appears to have taken place at that happy period, when, from circumstances, it became of more inestimable value to posterity by preserving many of the noblest productions of past ages, than perhaps a century later it would have been possible for it to have achieved. While the art thus flourished in Hungary, it was equally successful in Italy, and found in those distinguished patrons of literature, the Medici family, steady supporters, and liberal aid.
