ABSTRACT

COM POSITIONS O F CAROLAN N LI (title page missing) Dublin, post 1742 [See Lasairiona Duignan “A Checklist of the Publications of John and William Neale”, Irish Booklore Voi. 2 (1972-6), pp. 231-7. See also Joan Rimmer “Patronage, style and structure in the music attributed to Turlough Carolan”, Early Music, XV (1987) pp. 164-174. The first six pages of the National Library o f Ireland’s volume are missing. The seventh page commences with the last two bars of the first half of the Jig to James Betagh and its second half, and as this agrees with the corresponding part of same jig in John Lee’s Carolan collection of 1778, it seems clear that the two Betagh tunes must have appeared in the earlier collection. They now follow, as Nos. 893 and 894, with the whole of the first Betagh tune taken from the Lee collection]
