ABSTRACT
Operation COBRA was preceded by British Operation GOODWOOD on 18 July 1944 (see Caen). Whether Operation GOODWOOD was initially designed with the primary objective of aiding Operation COBRA by causing the Germans to commit their mobile reserve and the secondary intention of achieving a breakthrough, or vice versa, is still subject to debate. Unfortunately, it was also the cause of controversy and misunderstanding throughout the rest of the war.
