ABSTRACT
Daladier, Edouard (1884-1970) Prime minister of France on the outbreak of World War II. First elected to the Chamber of Deputies in 1919, Daladier was a protege of Radical Socialist leader Edouard Herriot and was party leader him self in 1927. Daladier held a succession of cabinet posts before becoming premier in 1933, and again briefly in 1934. He helped bring the radicals into the popular front with the Socialists and Commu nists in January 1936, but soon lost enthusiasm for collaboration with the Communists. On the col lapse of the popular front in 1938, he again be came prime minister.
