ABSTRACT

Falkenhausen, Alexander von (1878-1966) German general. A professional soldier of the old school, Falkenhausen served as military governor of occupied Belgium and northern France from 1940-1944. Born in Blumenthal on 29 October 1878, he served with the Turkish Army in Pales­ tine during World War I. Retained by the Reichs­ wehr after: the war, he headed the German military mission to China from 1934 to 1938. He was re­ called to active duty in 1939 and appointed mili­ tary governor in September 1940.
