ABSTRACT

In order to eliminate the training deficiencies that caused airmen so much trouble in North Af rica, Quesada developed a program to “crossflow” combat experiences from the Italian theater into his own organization. Each pilot was trained to conduct escort, interdiction, and fighter sweep missions. Each commander attended crossflow programs taught by the best commanders in the European Theater of Operations. Every pilot was encouraged to use his initiative, creativity, and aggressiveness to develop new tactics, which could further exploit the advantages of airpower.
