ABSTRACT

Rangers In the spring of 1942, U.S. Army Chief of Staff General George C. Marshall sent Colonel Lucian K. Truscott, Jr. (qq.v.) to London to coordinate the participation of American troops in British com mando (q.v.) raids against German-occupied Eu rope. On 26 May, Truscott proposed to Marshall that because the American forces would be under British control, they should be organized along commando lines. This suggestion was approved and Major General Russell Hartle, commanding general of the United States Army Northern Ire land Forces, was instructed to organize the new unit as soon as possible.
