ABSTRACT

Two approaches for understanding sex bias in performance evaluations are the cognitive information processing approach, which explains bias in terms of the manner in which raters cognitively process information about ratees' performance, and the lack of fit model, which explains bias in terms of raters' perceptions of the "fit" between the characteristics of a ratee and those required of the job. These approaches provide a unique perspective for understanding sex bias in performance evaluations. Furthermore, based upon these approaches, recommendations for the design of unbiased performance evaluations can be made.
