Employment and Child Care

In recent years the need for child care has increased tremendously. In 1987, 55 percent of women with children age three years or under were employed, compared with less than 25 percent in 1967 (Shank 1988). Unfortunately, adequate policies regarding child care are lacking in the United States as is research on childcare needs (Scarr et al. 1989).
