ABSTRACT
American Catholic Sisters played an important function in establishing the Catholic Church in America and were affected by the church's immigrant status. The church's need to address a rapidly expanding Catholic population and its adjustment to life in a new environment called for a shift in the lifestyle, roles, and needs of women in religious orders while the Catholic population grew (Misner 1988).
