Women in Journalism

The history of American women and journalism dates back to Colonial times, when women worked in family-run printing and publishing businesses (Beasley and Silver 1977; Beasley and Gibbons 1993). In fact, Mary Katharine Goddard was running the Maryland Journal, a prominent Baltimore newspaper founded by her brother, when the Continental Congress asked her to print the first copy of the Declaration of Independence in 1777.
