ABSTRACT

According to Webster's Third New International Dictionary, an entrepreneur is "the organizer of an economic venture, especially one who organizes, owns, manages and assumes the risks of a business." Almost one-third of the small businesses in the United States today are owned by women. Between 1980 and 1986, sole proprietorships owned by women rose from 2.5 million to 4.1 million—a 62.5 percent jump during a period when the receipts of male-owned businesses nearly doubled, from $36 billion to $71.5 billion (U.S. Small Business Administration 1986).
