seven The New York City Dialect book
More than seven million people live within the five boroughs that constitute greater New York City. They speak, in some form or other, practically every dialect on earth. About a million speak with varying degrees of Yiddish infiltrations. Thousands upon thousands speak with varying degrees of Irish, Italian, German, French, Russian, and other foreign dialects. A great many inhabitants use some form of regional American dialect. And, finally, hundreds of thousands of native-born New Yorkers use what has become known as the New York City dialect.
