The Cherry Orchard brought Chekhov and the Art Theatre into serious disagreement. Efros' innocent article still rankled with Chekhov even when the mistake had been adequately explained. This obsession with a minor mistake is a strong indication of Chekhov's state of mind and all subsequent reactions should be judged in the light of it.
