ABSTRACT

Volumnia is an aristocratic Roman matron and the mother of Caius Martius (a Roman general), who was given the name ‘Coriolanus’ at the beginning of the play, after his victory over the Volscians. She is predominant over her son (“There’s no man in the world / More bound to’s mother’) and manages to persuade (even bully) him to do things against his own will as the play progresses. Her upbringing has made him the successful (and arrogant) warrior that he is.
