ABSTRACT

Katherine of Aragon, Queen of England (1485-1536) was the first wife of Henry VIII. She only had one surviving child (Mary) and after twenty years of marriage, Henry, desperate for a male heir and with an eye for Anne Boleyn, divorced her. She never accepted this (it was based on disputed reading of catholic church law); nevertheless, Henry allowed her to live out her life in some comfort. This is from her last scene of the play and she is giving her instructions to Capuchius (an ambassador from Rome and her nephew), who has been sent (too late) by Henry to wish her better health. She has just given him her last letter to Henry which he has agreed to deliver.
