ABSTRACT

Octavia (d. 11 B.C.) was the sister of Octavius Caesar and was married to Antony as part of a treaty between Octavius and Antony. (The two men were part of the triumvirate that ruled the Roman Empire after the defeat of the assassins of Julius Caesar, Octavius’ adoptive father.) With the onset of Antony’s affair with Cleopatra (Queen of Egypt, which was part of the Roman Empire) the two men started to fall out and this marriage marked a temporary reconciliation. However, Antony has just heard that Octavius has been angling for more power for himself and speaking ‘scantly’ of Antony. He tells Octavia and this is her response. She is probably in her twenties.
