ABSTRACT

The negative thoughts and feelings of the voice artist are all too easily communicated to the listener and they will obviously detract from the message or product. Most people find falling inflections to be negative, and descending pitch patterns switch them off – they stop listening. In the hands of an experienced professional the rising inflection may hardly be noticed, but it will be there. The pitch change may only be very small but the listener will ‘hear’ it as a positive message. People do not like change – they prefer things to stay just the way they are. If a voice agent or casting director does not have a person on his or her books they are likely to put more energy into keeping people off them than into giving people the chance to prove oneself. One will have to keep knocking on doors until finally they find one that is open to them.
