ABSTRACT

Lively art is a good thing in art when people are really alive, when they make an effort to reach a given point, when they repulse something, struggle for something, quarrel over something, overcome obstacles or are even anguished. Battle brings victory and conquest. The worst is when all is quiescent in art, all in order, definite, legitimate, when there is no need of argument, struggle, when there are no defeats, hence no victories either. Art and artists must move forward or else they will move backward. Art creates the life of a human soul. It must open his eyes to ideals, ideals created by the people. The Moscow Art Theatre rediscovered the means of establishing that relationship. Painting, music and the other arts which individually exercise an immediate appeal to the human soul are united in one whole in the theatre and that is what so reinforces its power.
