ABSTRACT

It is imperative that the draughtsman be familiar with the materials that he specifies for use through the medium of his drawings. Maintaining awareness of new developments is equally important. Obviously, in our business, this is a mammoth task: in a sense, each production ‘re-invents the wheel’ and so the array of materials that may be used is vast. The safest way of attempting to keep abreast of this subject is to wholeheartedly enter the brochure culture – in other words, become an avid collector of brochures. This can be addictive. Good! Just say yes! Get into the habit of noting the telephone numbers of companies that you spot who supply goods that you may, one day, find a use for. Certain suppliers will produce brochures to which you find yourself referring on a weekly basis (brochures for steel and plywood/MDF leap to mind). In such cases ensure that you are kept up to date with the most recent of those brochures.
