ABSTRACT

At the opposite end of the spectrum, in large companies, specialist ‘props buyers’ and makers may be employed and crew members may be detailed to set and move props on and off stage and even in the rehearsal room. Anything used in the action should be available for the cast to use from the first rehearsal onwards, or after it is mentioned in notes; it is important to provide the performers, and director, with objects to ‘play’ with. These are the real objects that have been acquired and are actually going to be used on stage. They should be introduced into rehearsal, as otherwise performers may get used to the wrong item and then complain or change their minds. Commonly confused with hand props, personals are props that are set in a performers dressing room or costume prior to a performance. Personals are likely to change from production to production.
