ABSTRACT

On November 3 1979 amidst growing tension between local factions of right- and left-wing groups a predominantly black neighborhood in Greensboro North Carolina set the stage for a bloody confrontation. The morning began with a gathering of demonstrators who were singing folk songs as they prepared for an anti–Ku Klux Klan rally scheduled by the communist-sponsored Workers Viewpoint Organization. At one point a caravan of slow-moving pickup trucks cars and a van filled with members of the K u Klux Klan and American Nazi Party entered the scene. The demonstrators kicked and hit the cars. Then with television news cameras recording the event the vehicles stopped. Several of the Klan supporters jumped out reached into the trunks of their cars pulled out shotguns and rifles and opened fire. Four demonstrators were killed instantly a fifth died two days later and seven others were injured. None of the Klan supporters was hit.
