ABSTRACT
The five papers in this section present John Carroll’s views on educational research, in general, and the relationship of research to schooling and school learning, in particular. Several issues are addressed in these papers: the nature and purpose of educational research, the responsibilities of educational researchers, and the necessary qualifications of educational researchers. As a consequence, this introduction is divided into three sections, one corresponding to each of the three issues.
