ABSTRACT

When Trivial Pursuit was introduced in the midst of the electronic video game craze, it appeared to be something of an anachronism. Rather than the “beep, bleep, buzz or zap” of its competitors, the game was played on a 20″ × 20″ multi-colored board adorned with a wheel-shaped pattern. The basic, or “genus,” edition came with 1,000 cards, each containing one question on each of six general subjects: Geography, Entertainment, History, Art & Literature, Science & Nature, and Sports & Leisure. Players, ranging from two to twenty-four in number, would ask each other questions with a correct answer allowing the respondent to move and receive another question. Typical questions included:

Who was Bram Stocker's most infamous character? (Dracula)

What's a newly hatched swan called? (a cygnet)
