ABSTRACT

Two teams of burly men pull against each other from opposite ends of a thick rope in this contest of brute strength. The rope must be between 4″ and 5″ in circumference and at least 35 yards long to accommodate two eight-man teams. A piece of colored tape marks the halfway point on the rope; 6′6 3/4″ on either side of the center are two white tapes. On the ground three parallel lines correspond exactly to the three markings on the rope. With the rope pulled taut–center mark over its corresponding ground mark–and the hands of the nearest member of each team within 12″ of the outside white tapes, the contest begins. The idea is for one team to pull the other far enough forward for the opposition's white mark to cross the center ground mark.
