ABSTRACT

In 1902, a worried Walter Germain Robinson wrote in an article for Cosmopolitan :

There is but one word as to the future. Is everything to be exclusive? Are the millionaires of this country selfishly to keep their sports to themselves, to run horseraces on private tracks, to have polo matches on private fields, to hunt on exclusive territory, to fish on rivers owned by them, and to acquire gradually vaster estates, much larger in area than those in England or on the Continent, and in fact to “own the earth”?
