ABSTRACT

Walter Camp, the American authority on the game of football during its formative period, described the flying wedge thusly:

… a half dozen good, solid fellows get in motion and concentrate their force and weight, running at full speed against one, two, or three men who are able to get under but partial headway, and who are obliged also to look for the man with the ball coming behind this mass, the shock is pretty severe, and repeatedly practiced, will use up even the stoutest and pluckiest.
