While many sluggers have flirted with breaking Babe Ruth's single season record of sixty home runs set in 1927,1961 proved to be a benchmark year in that (1) not one, but two, players–members of the same team, the Yankees–mounted a challenge; and (2) the mark was, in fact, finally eclipsed (well, sort of).
