Boxer Muhammed Ali, born Cassius Clay in Louisville, Kentucky in 1942, remained a cultural phenomenon throughout a career spanning three decades. He claimed to be the most famous man alive, a point which no one chose to dispute. Sports Illustrated featured him on its cover a record thirty-one times during its first thirty-five years of publication (including the special 35th anniversary edition cover).
