ABSTRACT

William “Refrigerator” Perry, the most refreshing story of the 1985 NFL season, appears to have owed his fame to the revenge motive. On October 13, against the San Francisco Forty-Niners, Perry carried the ball on the last two plays of the game for a net gain of four yards. The ploy was openly criticized as Mike Ditka's heavy-handed payback to San Francisco head coach Bill Walsh, who had employed Guy McIntyre, a 271-pound guard, in the back-field in the Forty-Niners’ 23–0 victory over the Bears in the previous year's NFC title game.
