ABSTRACT

Pete Rose's gambling habit became front-page news following baseball commissioner Peter Ueberroth's announcement on March 20, 1989 that his office was conducting a “full inquiry into serious allegations” about the Cincinnati Reds manager. Ueberroth's move seeded the media clouds, and the deluge that ensued drenched Rose–and baseball–in a torrent of stories divulging Rose's relationships with convicted felons, his alleged substantial betting losses, and his handling of lucrative memorabilia sales and autograph signings.
