ABSTRACT

Babe Ruth performed many heroic feats on the ball field during his twenty-two years as a major leaguer. Among his exploits were:

714 career regular season home runs–a total that remained unsurpassed for forty years;

a lifetime .342 batting average–a figure within the top eight all-time;

a season total of sixty homers in 1927–a total which, while eclipsed by Roger Maris in 1961, continues to be a record for a 154-game season; and

an outstanding record as a pitcher–ninety-four wins and forty-six losses during the regular season (3-0 in World Series play) along with a microscopic 2.28 ERA.
